Freshman

This year was just a begining for me. First time being in the real workouts, first time racing in the real races, no more of the short middle school boys and girls races. I really started here, I was able to run with the first people to really make this team become nationally noticed. That was awesome for me to see and it really inspired me to be that much more of a better runner. Also during this year I broke the Freshman Records at my school in the 800m, 1600m, and the 3200m.

1600m PR :  4:36 (Desert Hills Invitational)

3200m PR :  9:52 (Pine View Invitational)

Sophmore

This year I was really apart of the Varsity team. For cross country I was mainly 6th guy, but sometimes 5th. I really was able to learn a lot from all of the seniors and really connect with them. We took Region and State and I metaled in some of the races which was kind of a new thing for me. Then, in track I was one of the top 4 distance guys on the team and was scoring points every race. I really improved on my times, but not enough to get any class or school records. But, I did individually win a race and that was awesome. I qualified for the 3200m and 1600m at state and took 3rd and 5th. And it was really a good improvement from last year.

3 miles in the morning. Super nervous to race against the top of the top in region nine.

In the afternoon ran at the Hurricane Invitational 1600m today and 3200m tomorrow. 1600m felt really good 1:12, 1:11, 1:14, 1:09. To much of a jog on the third lap and tried my hardest to make up ground on the last lap. On the bright side I qualified for BYU and past a couple of people on the last lap. Not a bad time for the first meet of the year.

Today I started with cheering on the girls for Desert Hills before warming up. Then we warmed up 2 miles, during the two miles I was super nervous because I have never ran a 2 mile race before and if it was two miles it was when I was a kinderfesh and it was cross country so I was nervous for the reasons shown. As we came back from the warmup we got to the field and the first race of the girls was coming to a close. And the second one started. We cheered on the Schimbecks as we began calisthenics and strides. I went to get a sticker and looked at the heat sheet and saw that I was projected 11th in the race. I was so discombobulated that I didn't get a sticker until the race was minutes from starting. When we were being placed on the line I was standing one spot behind Alex Hill and as the gun shot he was of and I was somewhat in the back with Tanner Sharp and I could hear President Coach John Powell saying "Stick on Tanner Bryson!" I guess you could say that that was my game plan. As he moved up, I moved up. It slowly went on like that for the first mile in which my split was dead on what I was looking for 5:04. From here the "keeping up with Tanner" really began. On the 7th lap I noticed that we were coming up on Eric Lambert from Cedar and further ahead of him was Bronco and Spencer from Dixie. Eventually we hit the last lap and off goes Tanner. It was like I had lost my front tire I didn't know what to do except for chase it down. I hit the last 200m of the race and was too far off to catch anyone but I could prevent being caught and even cut down time. The quote that I thought of was surprisingly from Eminem "if you had one chance to seize everything you ever wanted? Would you take it or just let it slip?" I chase down the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, although I didn't catch any of them I was close to Spencer and was relived that the race was over.

Tough workout today in the heat and wind. 4x1200m, 3x300m, and 4x100m. In the 1200m we had a 800m split then went AO in the last 400m. 300m we hit a 52's. In the 100m we didn't time them but they felt like we were going so fast that we could have raced Usain Bolt.

Six miles easy after school and before the meet, helped with the meet setting up and being in the chute. 3 miles in the morning to Hidden Valley Park and back getting ready for the race at 8:30.

I showed up at the race at 7:00 to watch the 1500m for the decathlon and that was a lot of fun to watch. I got nervous because there was a lot of wind and it was getting cold quick. Started warming up at 7:45 and it was good pace to get ready for the race had great topics of conversation. As we got back we did some calisthenics and some strides. Got to the line next to Tanner Sharp and Alex Hill. As we were on the line I could hear Kale Sharp announced just before the race. As the gun went off I cut in as much as I could I was right behind Tanner and Alex was way ahead of him. As I continued to race, I felt great. Around lap 3 I was just behind Tanner and I pushed ahead of him and keep that for only a little while and Tanner passed me with 300m to go and I tried to kick and go for the gold. At about 150m I passed a Pine View guy and that put me in 3rd. Although not for long, because my kick didn't help me and finished in 4th, with a time of 4:40. Not exactly what I wanted but it is good for now.

3 miles in the morning. Today is the Desert Hills invite and today I Run the 1600m.

As I left school at 2:00 I was super nervous for the 1600m. Today my only goal was to break the Freshman 1600m Record was held by Josh Thatcher who ran a 4:37. As I got to the track I checked the list of who was racing and the times that they were projected to run. I found my teamates and got on a warm up. As we got back we saw the first race of the girls and did strides and calisthenics while that was going on. As I got to the line I wasn't next to Tanner Sharp as I normally am, but I was a couple of spots down from Jaden Melendrez. The gun goes off and about 75m later the gun shoots again, and we start again. I don't think I got enough strides in so it helped I think. The first lap went out strong at the pace I wanted 1:08, second lap not as strong 1:10, the third lap was the same 1:10, and finished at a 1:08. My finish I probably own the thanks to Spencer Neiville who was just ahead of me and I thought to myself "I can catch him, I can catch him!" And with less than a foot left I passed him, beating him by .08 of a second. Finishing with a total time of 4:36 and the freshman record. I felt great throughout the whole race and now need to cut down a couple seconds within the last couple races.

This morning woke up not really feeling 100%, nose a little stuffy and throat a little sore, but none the less still went and raced looking to beat my last time from the Pine View Invite. As I got there I went to the finish line area and found Sage, as we waited for the rest of those racing to start our warmup we walked around and tried to stay warm because the morning was cold. When everyone had arrived we left for a warmup and it was probably too early for a warmup but we went on one anyways. When we got back didn't do nearly enough calisthenics or strides. As the race was about to start and I lined up in front of Sage, whom I teased about this, in Ally 2 he went out and I felt pretty good. The first mile was a 4:56, which was what I wanted, the splits were 1:14, 1:14, 1:12, and 1:16, which weren't bad. But the second mile was 1:16, 1:17, 1:20, and 1:16. Not my best race, but it was something that needed to happen for me to progress.

This morning I got to the track early enough that I wouldn't miss my race because I have never ran an 800m race before. But, I got ready by watching the 3200m race and singing some Alt-J with Boston and Sage. I got some wisdom about the 800 from Kale and Josh about how the race goes and just some basics. I went on a 2 mile warmup and when I got back I was really nervous because I had a couple of things I wanted to accomplish today, first being break the freshman 800m record (2:07), second beat Alex Hill and his PR (2:05), accomplishing these things would put me at the fastest freshman in the state in the 800m. As I got to the line I was next to Alex and we wished each other good luck and did our things. As the gun shot we went out at what seemed really fast because I am used to the 3200m and 1600m. Hit the first lap at 61, and the second lap at 65. And at the 100m mark Alex was on my heels and I had to push myself as hard as I could just to stay ahead of him, I finished at 2:06. This put me at breaking freshman record, but put me behind Alex for second. I am felling a little Second Hills like...

As we got to the race I figured that I was racing last, so I rested and then I went on a warmup. We went about a mile then on the announcement the person said that fast girls then fast boys would race. So I was rushing to get my spikes and then they said that they were going to go back to the original plan. So I was rushing for nothing. I had already started to run around the turf to get some more of my warmup in. When the third group of boys were gonna my to the line I started my striders and then Sage said to me "That is Alek Parsons" and I was super ready for the race because it was going to be fast with the Ogden runners in the race. Felt really good, maybe too good... 1:07, 1.10, 1:10, 1:09. For a 4:36. Not to shabby, but another 1600m at region.

Got to the meet at about 8:30 and met up with Kale. We then waited for Sage and after he showed up we left for our warmup. We got the bike paths in front of the school. During our warmup Sage stop for a couple moments, but me and Kale kept running as we kept running Alek Parsons and the other Ogden guys past us. Sage was still behind us and when he caught up to us Kale said to him " Now all of the Ogden runners think your the slowest out of all of us!" That was pretty funny. But we got back to the track and continued to jog, do calisthenics and some strides. When we got to the line I was surprised to stand in the third spot with two Ogden guys to my left and two to my right and both Kale and Sage just outside of them. While the names were still being called I was able to talk to the Ogden guys and tell them where I was from and listen to them trash talk each other. As the race when off I was a little stuck, but nothing really bad. I did however see Alex and the rest of Pine View start off running up with Alek Parsons. As things went on the first laps weren't great 1:15 and 1:12. Not what I really was shooting for first too slow then too fast. But, around the third and fourth laps Kale caught up with me and from then out I tried to stick on him. Throughout the next two laps I was successful. Lap 7 killed me, with a 1:17. Sage and Eric caught me. I decided that I was going to finish with sage and not let anyone else pass me. Finished at a 9:54. Cooled down 2 miles and finished with running circles in the small skating place on the hill.

Today I woke up really excited for the Golden Hour. I got a two mile warmup in and as I started to put my spikes on and out of the blue my nose started to bleed... BADLY. I tried to stop it on my own, then I looked for my dad who I just spoke to. After, I couldn't find him I ran to where I knew coach would be. I told coach what had happened and he said not to worry. He helped wash wash the blood off and helped it stop by getting some tampons from who knows where and putting them in my nose, and by the way they worked quite well. It stopped the blood in a couple minutes. Now after the last call I went to the bullpen and got everything situated and started last minute warmups and strides. The gun had gone off and I went out really fast. The first mile I came across at 4:53ish. The last mile was 5:13. This is definatly not what I wanted for this weekend. But, that is ok... I have region and state in the next two weeks to turn it around.

2 miles warmup. The race was really good for the first four laps I went out with Sage and Kale just to see how things would go. After 4 pretty good laps the leaders of the race decided to slow way down and eight of us were in a pack. This was way hard to get around, but eventually I got through and passed Jaiden Melendrez and that was kind of weird. Nevertheless I found myself behind Josh Thatcher and Sage Ducote. I kept up with these guys until I had 800m left and started to go faster they had the same idea but went faster than I was going. Kale caught up to me and passed me with about 600m left. Preston Warby and Spencer Nevile eventually passed me with 500m left. I was beginning to think "Ninth isn't too bad for my first year. Right?" But with about 300m left I remembered what I had wrote down and decided to go all Danny Diez and go for the win. I passed them before the 200m mark and didn't let anyone pass me after that. I had almost caught Sage who at the time I thought was 7th. After I had finished I looked at the board to see if I had accomplished my goal of scoring points and I had. I had actually finished in 7th one place better than what I was going for.

First Desert Hills Time Trial of the year. Today I tried some new energy stuff which I think I'll continue using. Today I wanted to stay with Scott and try to out kick him, but plans quickly change. Scott wasn't running the pace I wanted to run. So, instead I went with Sage. I kept with him for most of the time. At about a mile and a half, I pushed my pace a little enough to have a kick at the end. I finished just behind Spencer and Jaiden and just in front of Sage. This Afternoon was the Cedar All-Comers, went in with two Goals and came out with both broken. As, the gun went off tried to get a good position, but I got caught behind some of my team and Pine View. After I got enough space I tried to get closer to Sage, Josh, Jaiden, Tanner, and Spencer. Got a good pack, stayed behind the entire Canyon View Team. By the time we got to the track we had gone right through them. Went up the hill and kept right with those top guys. Went through the second lap like the first one and started to feel a little fatigued from a hard start. Hit the third lap strong went with Josh. Hit the track and with about 100m left and Nick Hill passed me, I guess I couldn't return the favor. 15:50 was my time pretty good for the first race. Excited for the Season.

Josh Thatcher, Tanner Sharp, and Myself were stacked up against Jaiden Melendrez, Sage Ducote, and Spencer Ford. My team put me in an amazing spot just behind Spencer, and I had to push to keep up right on his hip. As, we were coming to a finish and Spencer was ging for a finish, I pushed up with him and because I didn't get the baton at the same time as Spencer and a kept the same space away from Spencer the whole time. Today was the SUU Invite, and it also was my second varsity race ever. We got off the bus and with little time the JV girls got little time to warm-up, and the varsity boys had about 2 hours. Everyone had really great races. We warmed up to the dollar store, and had plenty of time to get some good times in. As the race start we had Tommy and the rest of the Hype Squad cheered for us as we started racing. I kept with Josh for the first lap and then tried to go up with Sage and Spencer, but used the energy elsewhere and probably should have used it then. Second lap, still in fourth, I headed through the forest area and then the cement part. At about that time Josh past me and Tanner not far behind. 300m further Tanner and Mckade past me and I still had one more lap left. I kept trying to go a little faster to catch Tanner and push up to get that fifth spot. The last lap, I started going hard, and I hit the trail and my Team started cheering and I felt the energy and kept pushing. Nick Hill past me, and we had 800m left. Dallen Gillespie passed me, I couldn't get pushed back that far. I gave everything I had to push back and pass Dallen. 8th overall with a time of 16:24. 6th on the team. Live for another race.

In the afternoon we ran at the Bloomington Hills North Park and did 8x800m hill repeats at 2:30 to 2:40. Hit the time everytime, even the last one. The last one I jumped on top of the hay bails and I fell into a hole in one of the hay bails and slid for 10 feet, got up and finished for one of my fastest times.

Today I got up and felt really good, really ready for the race. Warmed up with Matt and Ethan just before the Frosh/Soph Girls had started. Got a good look at the course. Got to the line and did some strides with the Boys, Cheered and stepped up to the line. The gun went off and I got out perfectly and was in a nice position, Matt was to my right and another kid to my left. As we hit the track the kid to my left dropped. We hit the hill and I was feeling great. First hay bails jumped on top and pushed off. Second hay bails passed two people and jumped in between them. Third set of hay bails, I was in fourth. We get to the gauntlet and I passed the three guys with two of them just behind me, I finished the first mile leading. Second Lap first set of hay bails, Lone Peak guy was right next to me. I let him break the wind all the way until the third set of hay bails. After that it was all out effort through the gauntlet. I was leading around the bend when all of the sudden an Idiot Spectator was STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COURSE!!!! Who does that!!! I ran into the guy and the kid from Lone Peak passed me and finished just ahead of me.

Today was race day and I felt really good, except for that I wasn't ready for the late race and I didn't know how to balance my eating. I know now that I ate too much before I raced. I started out and felt really good. I was about 5 feet behind Josh. I tried to keep my stride smooth. Felt good through the first mile. In the second mile I was starting to feel the food that I had eaten. At the start of the Third mile I knew that I had to catch as many people as I could. I caught a couple, but it wasn't enough. With 200m left I started to push all out and I started to pull away from the guy I was running next to. I finished in an ok spot, not where I really wanted to be. But, overall this weekend was pretty good.

Pretty much played watched Boston and Josh, play some video games while we chilled, Played some games with the girls team, shopped for spikes.

When the race started I felt like I was going to get swallowed and not get out very well, but I stuck with Tanner and Spencer. At the one mile I crossed at 4:57, and noticed that all 7 of us were within 50 meters of each other which was pretty awesome. I kind of got dropped by Tanner and Spencer, but caught Spencer at the two mile and we crossed at 10:06, and I told Spencer that we needed to go. I couldn't hear him very well, but he probably mumbled some elvish. Ended up passing Spencer and went hard for the next mile catching everyone I could. I kept getting faster as I got closer to finishing. Then, at about 150m left Spencer caught back up to me and yelled a battle cry and we both crushed it to finish in the top 50. Probably my best race all season, and as an added bonus the weekend was pretty great too.

This morning we ran over to Pioneer Park for a Shake out run. Met with some less fortunate people exchanged stories and had a great time.

Got to the course and chilled for a little bit. Then we warmed up and got to the line and was cheered on from behind and to the left as well as the right. It was a really intense feeling, one that I had worked for a year to experience. The gun went off and so did we. I started out feeling great. I was right with Sage and Spencer which was right where I wanted to be. Went down the hill by the flowers, then up the big hill. I felt good. I didn't crush the hill, but still went hard. Pushed it around the duck pond and then a cramp started, I then continued to push and tried to rid myself of the cramp. As much as I tried to get rid of the cramp it wouldn't leave. So, I just ran with it. Finished as best as I could considering the circumstances. Didn't do nearly as good as I wanted to, I'll just have to redeem myself at Nike Southwest.

Today we did 12x400 repeats, the first 8 were at 1:12-1:10 and the last 4 were at 1:08-1:05. I felt pretty good. I hit all of my times and found my extra gear thanks to coaches speech before the last 400.

Today we had the Halloween Fun Run and I dressed up as Richard Simmons. There were some pretty great costumes this year with the Varsity Girls being the McFarland team, Coach Powell being Coach White, Boston with a Sweet Native American Headdress, and Scott with the Donald Trump costume. Always a run that I look forward to.

10 miles at Warner Valley. The first 5 were easy, the next 3 were at 6:30 pace, and the last 2 were at Nike Goal pace and I hit 10:25. Everyone did awesome. Josh was at 10:15 and Sage was at 10:30 and Jaiden was at 10:07. Felt really tired after a long, hard, fun week. After the workout I got in the Creeper Van, took a nap and ended up in Cedar at the Big Sky race and the races were incredibly fast. SUU rocked it. Went to Denny's after the race.

3 miles this morning

This afternoon was the race against Pine View. First did a 2.5 mile warmup, calisthenics, Strides, then Raced. Felt good for the first mile didn't go out hard but stayed close enough to keep the goal in sight. At he one mile I was 10-20ft behind the front pack. And they started going hard, I just focused on my stride (leaning forward, not hill striking, stuff like that) and also focused on Scott Sandberg and Dallen Gilespie. Once I got to the bridge with the corn stalk on it I was right behind Dallen and just passed Scott. At about 800m I said to myself that I need to go now if I wanted to get Dallen and Nick. I kicked with everything I had and it payed off. Caught Dallen with 300m left and Nick with 100m left. Got fifth behind four of my other teammates. Great race from everyone!

Five miles today. I ran by Weber High today, and it was at the warmest part of the day and it was still only 21 degrees outside. Man am I glad that I live in St.George. I started to run on a trail that was covered in snow and if you were barely off the main part your leg would sink into the snow up to your knee. So, after a quarter of a mile of that I decided to go a different way. As a bonus my knee felt even better than it did yesterday.

But, then it was five o'clock and 12 degrees outside so I ran and it was really cold and I didn't have anything to keep my mouth from being super cold so I wore my jacket backwards. And was still really cold, but not as cold.
